Claudia Niewels studied educational sciences at the University of Münster. In 2002, finishing her thesis on the evolution of consciousness, she received her PhD. The study analyzes the meaning of human consciousness across different academic disciplines like the Darwinian theory of evolution, philosophy, cognitive neuropsychology and artificial intelligence research. On this interdisciplinary basis, the
specifity of human consciousness was outlined and defined from a cultural-historical viewpoint.
Afterwards, she was assistant at the educational institutes at the Universities of Münster and Dortmund. In the beginning of 2009, Claudia Niewels joined the Center for Interdisciplinary Memory Research to work on the project "Autonomy - Latitude of the Self" as a postdoc research fellow. She is particularly interested in the theory and history of the cultural-historical school, neuroscientific and information-theoretical aspects of learning and education and development.
