Between autumn 1943 and spring 1944 28 female members of the SS guarded women imprisoned in the concentration camp Majdanek. Elissa Mailänder Koslov studied Nazi documents, testimonials, films and memorial literature to retrieve their motivations to apply for these posts and the violence that was part of their everyday lifes. Her study focuses on the experience of power and self-empowerment, the increasing brutality against prisoners but also the relationships and conflicts among the women, their relationships with male colleagues and the distribution of power inside the camp. Not all of the physical violence that was part of their service had been ordered from "above". Instead, SS-guards had certain scopes of action at their disposal to interpret their orders. And they made use of them.

We experience that our habits exceed the possibilities the capitalist system can provide. The financial crisis has taught us that we can not and we will not continue like we did before. Are Western democracies able to modernize and prepare for the future? Is it possible to change a system that is based on continuous growth to an economic and social system that builds on justice and quality of life instead? The future of democracy depends on the end of our illusion that the current system could continue to work in a globalized world.

Climate wars are consequences of climate change and lead to economic and social catastrophes. It is in this line of argument that Welzer interpretes endless streams of refugees, fights over water, civil wars - the entity of mass violence. Rich societies have already begun to keep "climate refugees" at a distance. The case of Ruanda for example shows how quickly societies are willing to approach social problems with radical and deadly solutions. The author describes violent consequences of climate change, the danger of ethnic cleansing and genocides. He also suggests what needs to be done to stop them.
